Play on Sand or Surf
If you prefer some adventure with your beach-going, the Texas coast offers plenty of activities – fishing, windsurfing and boating. Besides the beach, Galveston is home to many historic and architecturally significant spots. The 1877 Tall Ship Elissa is a floating museum on a 19th century ship restored to her full sailing glory of the era.
There are also plenty of landlubber attractions to keep visitors entertained. Take a ghost tour or shop on The Strand, a historic, 70-block gem with Victorian buildings housing boutiques, theaters, museums and old-time shops. Visit Moody Gardens, which boasts both a rainforest pyramid and an aquarium pyramid. Or discover the Historic Pleasure Pier, a family-friendly destination and one of very few spots that has rides over the water.
Pirates, Ports and Protection
If you live near Galveston, it’s worth knowing about the island’s colorful and stormy history. Pirate Jean Lafitte established a settlement on the island, located two miles off the Texas coast, in 1817. During the Texas Revolution, Galveston served as the port for the Texas Navy. In 1900, a deadly hurricane devastated the town, and subsequent major storms have caused complications from flooding. After the 1900 storm, a 10-mile long, 16’-high seawall was constructed along Galveston’s oceanfront to protect against hurricanes and tropical storms. Entire city blocks were raised. Today, the city has regulations in place to protect areas of natural flood plain functions, such as the dunes and wetlands, as well as strict evacuation protocols and new building codes.

This community brings homeowners plenty of recreational opportunities with miles of nature trails, a resort-style pool and splash zone, a sand volleyball court and tennis courts.
